...as part of their standard training (at least, some
of them). More precedent from the manliest of manly
men (and women, see fire department link#2)!

Wood chopping boxers include:

Jack Dempsey, George Foreman, Oscar de la Hoya ("all
the old school fighters")

George is apparently also into "dragging trees" which
may be a little much for non-super heavyweight
champions.

Why would boxers chop wood? According to their "old
school" trainers: to develop "quick muscle" as opposed
to just the "slow muscle" of weight lifting. Sound
like an old wives tale? *You* tell these guys that.

Here are links to sites of sledgehammer swinging fire
departments:

"The sledgehammer is the safest and least
skill-dependent tool for forcible-entry/ventilation
training...This simple and inexpensive training
exercise offers great benefits."
